Kitchen Appliances

If you haven't shopped for appliances in a while, wow, there are so many options.  It's pretty overwhelming when you first start. I mean there are tons of brands and each one has pros and cons, with different features/styles for each appliance. Since we're going to be getting all of the appliances around the same time, we're going to try to match them, so that means finding one manufacturer that we really like and picking from what they have.  So far, I like GE the best, but there are a lot of close contenders.

For appliances, I'm pretty sure we want a counter-depth side-by-side fridge. I just don't know if I like the French-door style with the drawer freezer or not. I think we'll have to think about this more before we buy, there are definitely pros and cons to each of them.

We're also going back and forth about getting gas hooked up for the stove or keeping it electric.  I'm concerned about having a gas oven for baking/broiling because I've heard they're so different, but I know the gas cook-top would be nice.  But, I also love the built-in look of a slide-in range. Then there's also single vs. double ovens and conventional vs. convection. There are just so many options and I don't know if there is one that actually has the right combination!

The microwave and dishwasher are pretty easy, but they're fun to shop for too ;).

Other brands we're looking at are:
Kitchen Aid, Kenmore Elite, LG and others.

  1. My brother works for Sears Repair and he said the French-door style with the drawer freezer is the refrigerator that breaks down the most. Be careful with that! I love your other choices though. I'm putting in a bid on a foreclosed house today, hopefully the wait won't be to long.

  2. Thanks for the info! I actually prefer the side-by-side anyways and I've heard the same thing about the French-door fridges and that there can be problems with the ice/water dispensers.

  3. My grandparents have the stainless fridge with the freezer on the bottom and the one big door for the actual fridge and they love it. It's nice to only have to bend down for stuff when you're going into the freezer because you go into the freezer a lot less than you go into the fridge.
And I vote for the gas range cook top! We had them in our old house and they were great! They cooked things a lot more evenly too.

  4. Hi Meredith! I found your blog from The Nest if I remember correctly. I also live in Raleigh, NC areas and graduated from NC State!
I would totally vote for the French door fridge. My husband and I bought a townhouse a couple years ago and went with the standard side-by-side and we hate it now. There just isn't a lot of storage room in the freezer, it's not even wide enough to hold a frozen pizza! My in-laws just got a french door fridge and it is amazing! So much room in the freezer drawer and their's actually still has double doors for the fridge part so you don't have to hold the large door open and let out all the cold air. Not sure if that helps or not thought :) I like your blog!
