Updates around the house

I haven't posted in a while, but we actually have been doing some updating around the house! I am planning to do more detailed posts of the progress, but I've got some teaser photos to tide you over.

Here are some (not so great) iPhone pictures of the projects I'm currently working on or have recently completed:

- adding photos and prints to the gallery wall in the media room

- media room bar

- working on the alcove area of the media room

- painting and redecorating master bedroom

- prepping for Thanksgiving and upcoming parties

Be back soon with more! :)

Our next project

For a while, I haven't really felt like taking on any new projects at the house. Once your house gets to a certain point, it's easy to ignore the minor things you had on your to-do list. And actually, that's a really nice feeling. But, recently I decided that I do want to finish our master bedroom soon. I decided that a room that we spend so much time in should be loved just as much as all of the other rooms I've decorated.

My first vision of this room is to have a bold wall color with neutral decor. We have a lot of pale and pastel colors elsewhere in our house, so I want something different on the walls here. I'm thinking a navy or slate blue, with light gray, taupe and white accents. So this weekend, I spent some time picking paint samples and painting.

We will probably keep our bedding, at least for a little while, so I decided I need to pick a color that goes well with that but can be flexible, if we change it in the future.

At first glance, my top contenders for paint were: Benjamin Moore: Mysterious, Evening Dove, Blue Note, Normandy, and Hale Navy, and Sherwin Williams Granite Peak.

I narrowed that down to BM Evening Dove, BM Mysterious, and SW Granite Peak and painted samples of those on posterboard.

Our favorite is the one on the left, Evening Dove by Benjamin Moore. We will probably paint this weekend (hopefully!) since Sherwin Williams is having a 40% sale (I usually color-match BM paint to SW, since their store is closer to us).
So, what do you think about this color? It's dramatic, but I think it will be a nice change from boring white walls. With three windows and a vaulted ceiling in this room, I don't think it will be too dark. Other things we hope to do in the room such as paint or swap out furniture will also add contrast, so I think it will be pretty.

Here's a picture of BM Evening Dove in another room. I am pretty excited!

Hello...

Sorry, for being so absent recently! I haven't posted all of August... and it's almost Labor Day! I had all of these ideas about what I was going to blog about and then, I guess life got in the way. I just haven't been feeling like blogging lately, probably because there hasn't been much going on around the house to show you. Well, what have we been up to recently?

We've been celebrating birthdays and enjoying spending time with friends...
Dinner at Sitti for Jenny's birthday
Cake for Jenny's birthday
Sushi for Sarah's birthday

And recently, one of the only household related things I've been working on, I've been collecting items for our new bar area in the media room. Here's a sneak peak:

An unexpected purchase

Well... long story short, we bought a new car last week! Last Sunday was the beginning of a stress-filled week trying to figure out the best thing to do with one of our cars, but it all worked out for the best.  Kevin's car bit the dust a little earlier than we expected. We had been hoping it would last us until next summer, but some costly repairs made it blatantly obvious that it no longer made sense to keep putting money into it.
Kevin with his car on our last day with it!
Being a huge planner, I had already researched cars and figured out what we would probably buy next year and how much we wanted to spend... so even though this was pretty unexpected, we really just had to fast-forward our plan, and thankfully, we were able to make it work!  We bought a new 2013 Toyota Highlander SE in Magnetic Gray Metallic, and we're so happy with our purchase.
After we bought our new car!
The Highlander is perfect for us, because it is a crossover SUV that is built on an Avalon/Camry frame, it drives like a car (I like that!).  But it's better than a car because we can fit 7 people in it and it has lots of cargo room, when the seats are folded down.

We did get a few special features that we really liked while looking at them on the lot. We picked black leather interior and upgraded navigation and sound system. Kevin is loving being able to control his iPhone via controls on the steering wheel and access apps and music in the car. Well, since pictures are better than words, here it is in our driveway!

We are so excited, now we just need to make sure that it lasts us a very long time... which I know it will!
